How To Choose Artificial Grass For Football Field
Artificial turf is becoming more and more widely used in our lives and we see it in parks, schools, backyards and stadiums. Artificial turf is no stranger, but do you know how to choose it? If you plan to lay the artificial turf for a soccer/football field, this article can help you better understand artificial turf. Here are some of the more essential features of artificial turf.
1. Types of Football Artificial Turf
Football artificial grass can be broadly divided into two categories, infill and non-infill. Filled football artificial grass is used more often and needs to be filled with quartz sand and rubber granules. Non-infill soccer artificial grass is shorter in height, higher in density, generally straight and curled, and does not need to be filled with quartz and rubber granules, which is more convenient to use. However, the price of non-filled soccer grass is much higher than that of filled soccer grass.
2. Artificial Grass Pile Height
The artificial grass pile height, as the name implies, is the height of the pile. It is the height of the grass strands, not the overall height including the bottom. Generally, the pile height of infill soccer artificial grass is from 40mm to 60mm. The pile height of non-filled soccer artificial grass is from 30mm to 40mm, the pile height will affect the quality, but it doesn't mean the higher the pile height is, the better the quality is, many factors determine the quality of artificial grass, the pile height is just one of them.
3. Artificial Grass Colors
There are many colors of artificial turf, it can be a separate color or a mix of two colors. For soccer artificial grass it is usually dark green and light green. The functional line of artificial grass is white. The color masterbatch determines the color of the grass. If you want to tune a custom color, you need a relatively high minimum order quantity, but generally the factory has enough colors to choose from.
4. Artificial Grass Stitches
Stitch distance is the distance between each stitch of artificial grass. Stitch distance also affects the quality. If the stitch distance is small, then the density of artificial grass will be higher. Generally, calculate the stitch distance of soccer artificial grass is calculated by how many stitches are within 1 meter. For example, stitches 200s/m means there are 200 stitches in 1 meter.
5. Artificial Grass Gauge
Artificial grass gauge refers to the distance between each row; the smaller the row spacing, the denser the grass. The gauge for soccer artificial grass is usually 3/4 inches and 5/8 inches. Gauge is usually determined by a fixed machine, some factories can only do 3/4”, some can only do 5/8,” but of course there are factories that can do both. Gauge is the only factor that cannot be changed in the production of artificial turf.
6. Artificial Grass Dtex
Dtex refers to the weight of artificial grass yarn, generally calculated by 10,000 meters of grass yarn. The dtex of soccer artificial grass is typically 8000 - 12,000. The higher the dtex means the thicker the grass, the more expensive it is.
7. Artificial Grass Density
Artificial grass density is determined by gauge and stitch, and is not directly produced. If you want a higher density artificial turf, the gauge should be small and the stitch should be dense. The higher the density, the softer the grass and the better the foot feeling, but the softer is not the better, you have to pick the right density according to the actual sport. The normal density of soccer artificial grass is 10,500 and 14,700.
8. Artificial Grass Backing
The backing is also very important for the quality of artificial turf. If the backing is not good, then all the conditions mentioned above are useless. Since football athletes play on artificial turf, there will be a lot of friction, so artificial turf backing should have a strong grip so that the grass yarn will not be pulled up easily. Usually, the backing of soccer artificial turf should be reinforced with grid cloth, SBR backing or better PU backing, which is more expensive and better quality.
All above are the main factors that affect the quality of soccer artificial grass. You can choose the right product according to your budget or the quality required for your project.
